ocfc surrender two goals in second half to fc arizona

Mesa, AZ – The NPSL Southwest has produced its fair share of rivalries and when it comes to Orange County FC and FC Arizona, the two teams have crossed paths eight times since 2017.

Matches against FC Arizona have always been tough for OCFC.

But in the first six encounters, FC Arizona was unable to score a goal as three matches ended in scoreless draws and the other three finished in victories for OCFC.

The roles have reversed in 2019 as FC Arizona completed the season sweep of OCFC with a 2-1 victory on April 20.

The first half went well for OCFC as Cody Shelton scored his eighth goal of the season to give his team the lead in the 30th minute.

But the second half took a turn for the worst when FC Arizona scored two goals in seven minutes.

A handball just after the hour mark led to a penalty kick for FC Arizona.

OCFC keeper Pepe Miranda stopped Cesar Mexia’s penalty but the rebound went back to Mexia and he tapped the ball into the net to level the score in the 63rd minute.

Seven minutes later David Alton found himself all alone with Miranda and chipped his shot over the Cuban goalkeeper to put FC Arizona in the lead.

There was plenty of time left in the match and the chances would come for Orange County FC.

But none of the chances resulted in goals and OCFC lost its second match of the season in frustrating fashion.

There have been plenty of ups and downs in 2019 and OCFC will be hoping to get back on track when it hosts A.S. Los Angeles on April 27.
