The Hot Streak Continues for OCFC 2!
ocfc 2 grinds out victory in physical match with la maquina fc
Lake Forest, CA – Every week there seems to be the same question and it involves whether or not OCFC 2 can continue its winning streak.
On Sunday night at Lake Forest Sports Park, OCFC 2’s winning streak was tested against La Maquina FC.
Early on it was OCFC 2 creating the scoring opportunities and nearly took the lead minutes after the kickoff but striker Dakota Collins was denied by La Maquina keeper Miguel Marin.
OCFC 2 started off as the better side but La Maquina took the lead when Willie Morse connected on a perfect pass and put his shot past keeper Brent Reis.
Unable to find a goal in the first half, some members of OCFC 2 were frustrated going into the interval.
But we have seen OCFC 2 come from behind on more than one occasion this season and on Sunday night OCFC 2 refused to let its opponent dictate the match.
Jonny Romero returned from a one-game suspension and also picked up a yellow card in the first half but luckily for him, head coach Paul Caligiuri decided to leave his talented midfielder in the lineup.
Caligiuri has been known for his in-game adjustments and one of those was switching Dakota Collins from striker to winger.
In the 67th minute, Collins found space down the left side and carried the ball into La Maquina’s penalty area. A centering pass from Collins found second half substitute Guilherme.
The Brazilian striker was on the ground and struggled to get the ball in the net but luckily Jonny Romero came to the rescue to hammer the ball home and level the score at 1-1.
“It was a game of rhythms and with La Maquina dictating the first half, it was hard to find Dakota up top,” Paul Caligiuri said. “The adjustment on the outside really changed the rhythm of the game. Dakota was creative in helping our attack and it put pressure on La Maquina’s defense.”
The match remained tied until the final minutes and it was evident that La Maquina was playing for a draw but in the 84th minute, OCFC 2 was awarded a free kick just outside the penalty area.
Jonny Romero – known for his long-range scoring abilities – placed his shot over the wall and past Marin to give his team a 2-1 lead.
The physical play continued and La Maquina was reduced to ten men.
Minutes later Guilherme received an excellent through ball and calmly dribbled around keeper Marin to give OCFC 2 a 3-1 victory and sixth consecutive victory.
It was a hard-earned win and it was the perfect OCFC 2 debut for center back Kevin Belmonte, midfielders Daniel Yo and Andrew Hernandez, and keeper Brandon Gomez, who came on for Reis in the second half.
All four members suited up for OCFC in the 2017 NPSL Regular Season and surely this will only make OCFC 2 stronger down the stretch of the 2017 Fall UPSL Season.
OCFC 2 demonstrated excellent team work and once again showed why its the hottest team in the UPSL.
“We are OCFC,” Jonny Romero said. “We are resilient, we never give up, and we just found our second wind.”
