Shelton Scores Late, OCFC defeat Temecula! [Video]
orange county fc wins first ever match in temecula
Temecula, CA – It was a match that Orange County FC badly needed but the three points wouldn’t come easy against Temecula FC, a team that has done a great job playing the role of spoiler.
Just like previous meetings in the wine country, there would be plenty of frustration throughout the windy night.
There were plenty of opportunities in the first half and early on midfielder Dowan Kim created a turnover when he stole the ball from center back Oliver Nelson.
Kim was one-on-one with Temecula keeper Mitchell Foster, but Kim’s shot bounced off the crossbar.
Later in the half, OCFC had a throw-in deep in Temecula territory. A routine powerful throw-in from Cody Shelton found a wide-open Oscar Flores with a free header.
But Flores’ header sailed high over the bar as the match remained scoreless.
The minutes ticked away in the first half and eventually Cody Shelton found himself all alone in the Temecula penalty area against Foster, who had come off his line, but Shelton’s shot went agonizingly wide.
With the score 0-0 at the half, OCFC head coach Paul Caligiuri didn’t hesitate to make changes as he brought on Michael Bryant and Daniel ten Bosch for Bryan Arguez and Dowan Kim.
The changes paid off as Orange County FC took the lead in the 55th minute. Blake Frischknecht carried the ball down the left flank and found winger Tristan Weber.
Foster came off his line to parry Weber’s shot.
Oscar Flores took a shot at the open net off the rebound and Daniel ten Bosch knocked in the ball to put OCFC in front for the first time ever in Temecula.
But the lead lasted only three minutes as Temecula caught OCFC sleeping and a pass from Bryan Orta from the right side found Nathan DaRosa to tap the ball into an open net.
It was a frustrating moment for the OCFC players as they knew a tie on the road would do no good at this point in the season.
Caligiuri continued to make changes to his personnel and immediately brought on Joshua Bynoe for Flavio Olioso.
Bynoe would come close on two occasions late in the match to score the winner but sent his shots over the bar both times.
With time winding down, OCFC furiously looked for the game winner and continued to dominate the match.
Six minutes remained on the clock when Ryan Holland got the ball to Michael Bryant. After a quick touch, the ball found its way to Cody Shelton.
Shelton immediately got the ball to Joshua Bynoe and the English midfielder took advantage of the space in the Temecula midfield by quickly sending the ball to Daniel ten Bosch.
The man who scored the goal earlier in the night became the provider as Daniel ten Bosch’s cross was beautifully finished off on the volley by a flying Cody Shelton to give OCFC a 2-1 victory.
“Everyone knows we have a target on our backs, everyone is going to give us their best game, and every conference game is tough right now,” midfielder Cody Shelton said.
“But guys kept working and grinding and subs came in and improved the game for us and in the end got us the result. Champions find a way to win even when it’s ugly.”
OCFC returns home to host Albion Soccer Club on June 15 at Portola High School in what will have huge playoff ramifications.
