Santa Ana Scores Late to Defeat OCFC 2 [Video]
orange county fc 2 fall to Santa Ana winds despite late comeback
Lake Forest, CA - It was a much anticipated game in the UPSL Western Conference Pro Premier SoCal South between OCFC 2 and Santa Ana Winds FC.
In the first half it was all Santa Ana Winds as their physical play and pressing was too much for OCFC 2 to handle.
Jordan Gorman struck first to put Santa Ana in front and late in the first half it was Xavier Corona who scored late to give the favorites a 2-0 lead going into the interval.
OCFC 2 head coach Paul Caligiuri tinkered with his lineup and Santa Ana immediately realized the second half would be much more different than the first half.
Midfielder Andrew Hernandez made his return to OCFC 2 and made an instant impact when his run down the left side resulted in a centering pass that was finished off by the other second half substitute Guilherme to cut the lead in half.
Orange County FC 2 continued to keep up the pressure but captain Michael Bryant's free header in front of the net went over the bar.
The minutes ticked away and OCFC thought they had a penalty kick coming when Guilherme was brought down in the Santa Ana penalty area, but the referee signaled to play on.
With stoppage time approaching, a perfect pass from substitute Afghan midfielder Murtaza Lutfy found Guilherme and the Brazilian striker perfectly placed his shot past Quinn Harter to level the score at 2-2.
It looked as if the I-5 Derby would end in a draw, but Santa Ana immediately earned a corner kick and Jordan Gorman scored his second of the game to put his side back in front.
OCFC 2 keeper Benito Gonzalez protested in vain afterward that there was a handball from one of the Santa Ana players and eventually was given a straight red card.
The referee blew the final whistle as the protesting continued. It is possible that more stoppage time could have been played and it was certainly not the ideal ending to an entertaining match.
Next up for OCFC 2 is an encounter with OC Real Force on Saturday October 13 at Lake Forest Sports Park.
