Dawon kim scores a brace as orange county fc defeat riverside coras 4-0

Riverside, CA – Going into the match with Riverside Coras on March 17, a tough match was expected considering the two previous meetings in Riverside finished in high scoring draws.

But this time, there would be no drama as Orange County FC dominated in a 4-0 victory to earn its first win at Riverside.

Left-back Tekodah Lobsiger came close to scoring the first goal of the game when his long-range shot hit the cross bar in the 22nd minute.

One minute later, a throw-in from Cody Shelton was chested into the net by Michael Bryant to give OCFC a 1-0 lead.

OCFC kept up the pressure and the Riverside defenders were all over the place and out of position.

Dawon Kim doubled the lead in the 29th minute when he was left unmarked in the penalty area after connecting on a cross from right-back Luke Ackermann.

Ten minutes later a turnover from Riverside center-back Jose Perez deep in his own territory created an opportunity as Luke Ackermann quickly got the ball to striker Dakota Collins.

With no hesitation from Collins, the dangerous striker turned provider when his cross from the right side was easily slotted into the net by Cody Shelton to give OCFC a commanding 3-0 lead.

Riverside made a push in the final minutes of the first half to try and cut the lead, but the OCFC backline tightened up and goalkeeper Pepe Miranda made sure OCFC took a three-goal lead into the interval.

The second half did not have nearly as much excitement, but Orange County FC was able to put on the finishing touches in the 69th minute to complete the four-goal victory.

A long ball from center-back Ryan Holland found Dawon Kim and the speedy Korean winger easily went around Manolo Tornel and took it all the way to score his second goal of the match and third in the last two weeks.

It was a great victory for OCFC, and it was a special day for Man of the Match Cody Shelton as he led the way against his former team and older brother Shane Shelton, center-back and player/coach of Riverside Coras.

Cody Shelton came close to scoring his second goal of the match in the second half, only to be denied by a sliding kick save from his older brother Shane.

But Cody was full of praise for his teammates after the match.

“I think our work rate and shape was much better today in the midfield,” Cody Shelton said. “Up top we are getting a lot more dangerous with the runs we are creating.”

Orange County FC will look to create more runs and opportunities when it hosts Temecula FC on March 23 at Portola High School.
