Orange county fc advances to second round of 2018 u.s. open cup

Irvine, CA – In July 2017, Orange County FC’s debut season in the NPSL ended in heartbreak. But since then, head coach Paul Caligiuri and his squad were constantly looking forward to their debut appearance in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

The moment came on May 9 at Championship Soccer Stadium as Orange County FC hosted Santa Ana Winds FC of the United Premier Soccer League.

Fans from both clubs came out in full effect to create the perfect tournament atmosphere.

Going into the U.S. Open Cup First Round, a lot of the talk was centered on the inconsistencies of OCFC and breakdowns in the midfield.

There was little time to prepare after a tough road victory on Cinco de Mayo, but OCFC was ready.

Many OCFC players that suited up still had fresh memories in their heads from that night in January when Santa Ana Winds eliminated OCFC 2 from the 2017 Fall UPSL Playoffs on penalties.

But Paul Caligiuri’s men were not playing with a chip on their shoulders. Instead, they were focused only on winning.

Both teams traded possession throughout the first half with neither team creating excellent chances until the 41st minute when midfielder Daniel ten Bosch rifled a thirty-yard laser past Santa Ana Winds keeper Quinn Harter to give OCFC a 1-0 lead.

The goal from ten Bosch was perfect timing as OCFC took the momentum into the halftime locker room.

Fans in attendance were anticipating an exciting second half and got what they wanted.

Santa Ana Winds brought the pressure as they looked for the equalizer and appeared to be playing with more confidence when substitute Kramer Runagar was subbed on, but the visitors were unable to capitalize.

Orange County FC weathered the storm and soon it was Santa Ana trying to fend off attacks from the home side.

Minutes after the hour mark a corner kick was cleared out by the Winds but OCFC center-back Patrick Ianni kept the play alive by sending the ball towards the Santa Ana penalty area.

A header from Cody Shelton found Dakota Collins and the centering pass was finished off by Alessandro Canale to give OCFC a 2-0 lead.

Down by two goals, Santa Ana needed to take more risks. But that meant more possibilities for OCFC to burn the visitors on the counter attack.

Alessandro Canale had been a problem all night for the Santa Ana Winds backline with his physical play and excellent finishing skills.

With fifteen minutes remaining, Canale got an assist when Daniel ten Bosch scored his second of the night to finish off the Santa Ana Winds after his shot deflected off defender Xavier Corona.

OCFC players and fans were delighted at the final whistle. A 3-0 victory was the perfect debut in the U.S. Open Cup for Orange County FC.

Next up in the Second Round is a road fixture with Fresno FC of the United Soccer League on May 16.

Many OCFC fans felt adjustments needed to be made entering the night against Santa Ana, but now it is time to prepare for the next battle.

Coach Paul Caligiuri knows a tough match awaits OCFC, but he is hoping for more great memories of the U.S. Open Cup.

He added another with the 3-0 win over Santa Ana Winds.
