Another Case of Déjà vu for Orange County FC in Home Opener
Dakota Collins leads Orange County FC IN dominant win over Oxnard Guerreros FC
Irvine, CA – It appears that Orange County FC really enjoys its home openers and the reason being is that every home opener since 2017 has finished in a dominant victory.
For the third consecutive year, OCFC won its home opener by a five-goal deficit by thrashing Oxnard Guerreros FC 6-1 on Saturday night at Portola High School.
One week ago, OCFC looked out of sync on the road against City of Angels. But this time it was OCFC that was taking care of business right from the kickoff.
Dakota Collins scored the first goal of the game from close range when he finished off a pass from Cody Shelton in the third minute of play.
Twelve minutes later, OCFC was awarded a penalty after a handball from Oxnard center-back Aaron Glover.
Winger Jonny Romero stepped up and converted from the spot to give Orange County FC a 2-0 lead.
The rout continued as Collins scored his second of the match three minutes later to make the score 3-0.
Some might say that the long trip was a problem for Oxnard.
But on this night, OCFC was determined to make a statement by closing down space and getting into the passing lanes in the midfield.
A turnover from Oxnard that was created by midfielder Dawon Kim led to another goal-scoring opportunity and Aaron Glover’s disaster night continued when his foul led to another penalty kick for OCFC.
Dakota Collins completed his hat-trick by sending keeper Angel Cervantes the wrong way as OCFC led 4-0 after only twenty-two minutes.
Things settled down a bit and Oxnard finally got on the board when Alberto Anguiano took advantage of a defensive mistake to cut the lead to 4-1 in the 34th minute.
OCFC refused to let off the gas in the second half as Cody Shelton scored a brace to complete the 6-1 victory.
In the 49th minute, Shelton received a pass from substitute Armando Flores and fired in a left-footed shot from the top of the penalty area.
Minutes later a corner kick from Andrew Hernandez couldn’t be cleared and Shelton pounced on the loose ball to score his second of the night.
After two matches, Orange County FC is looking good with two victories.
As for the man of the match, it was definitely another case of Déjà vu for Dakota Collins as he scored a hat-trick against Oxnard in the home opener for the second year in a row.
“There were a lot of players who had a really good game tonight,” Dakota Collins said. “When you start off well...you just keep going with that same momentum throughout the game.”
Orange County FC will be looking to continue the momentum when it hosts FC Arizona on March 1.
